Some final notes on programming: With the combination of this decoder, motor and the Digitrax Zephyr, reading back CVs seems to be a very unreliable affair. Paged mode succeeded almost never, dir mode half of the time. This was a bit astonishing as this equipment normally does not have difficulties reading CVs. But there is no problem writing CVs, so I changed a few (address, starting voltage and switching lights) and did the test run.
