You can set the system-wide default version using alternatives. Higher
automake versions have higher default priorities so unless you have run
update-alternatives manually, autoreconf will always use the newest
installed automake package.

Also, you can override autoreconf's selection by setting the AUTOMAKE,
ACLOCAL etc. environment variables.
